Gothic jewelry is one of the brand's many fortes.
David Yurman spent his early life on Long Island, N.Y. & first stepped out as a designer and business man peddling little sculptures in his high school cafeteria. Later, at age 16, he was introduced to Cuban sculptor & welder Ernesto Gonzales while paying his sister a visit in Provincetown, MA. Through the art of sculpting, David discovered an outlet & focus for his creativity, which he would develop over the following two decades as an apprentice under renowned sculptors Jacques Lipshitz & Theodore Rozack (he collaborated with Picasso & Modigliani). Following a year at NYU, David left college & traveled across America to California where he gained refuge in the bohemian artist hub of Big-Sur. In the late 1960’s, David returned from his bohemian sojourn to Greenwich Village where he began working with Hans Van de Bovenkamp.
It was in his studio that David encountered Sybil Kleinrock, a talented, beautiful painter who, like David Yurman, just recently returned from the Californian beatnik scene. One day while wearing one of David Yurman’s pieces to an art event, Sybil Kleinrock’s adorment caught the attention of the gallery owner who enquired if it was for sale. Although David Yurman couldn’t imagine recreating something so personal, Sybil Kleinrock recognized an commercial potential. In the early 1970’s, David & Sybil shifted to the countryside & founded Putnam Art Works. Throughout the decade, David & Sybil showcased their designs & paintings at numerous craft exhibitions, & in 1979 they tied the knot.
Running Putnam Art Works allowed the couple to learn about the market for fine crafts and jewelry, laying the groundwork for the establishment of David Yurman Inc, in 1980. By 1985, Yurman had become famous for his iconic cable bracelet. Today, David Yurman Inc offers a huge variety of jewelry & watch collections for men and women, and his own iconic fragrance & eyewear product line.
It was in the year 1982 that David Yurman showcased his trademark David Yurman cable bracelet – a twisted helix adorned with gemstones on its finial ends. Some other notable collections include Silver Ice (incorporating silver & paved diamonds), the Buckle Collection & the X collection. Today, David Yurman often adorns the pages of established fashion magazines like Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and Town & Country, with its jewelry being showcased by Supermodel Kate Moss and others. The huge popularity of David Yurman jewelry can be attributed to the fact that it serves all audiences. It produces both classic jewelry and the increasingly popular gothic jewelry market.
