Lou Guerin - A Review by Punksilver
Lou Guerin: Primitive-Futurist
Lou Guerin is a leading designer of gothic jewelry. The established mason comes from Brittany in the Celtic region of France. Lou started his world exploration at the tender age of 17. Three short years after the start of his adventure, he began crafting leather in Paris, making fashionable belts. Lou Guerin then began traveling in Mexico, the place where he picked up the Huarache Indian braiding skills. He then modified these techniques in Ibiza, Spain, where he immersed himself for 8 years in a creative environment of leather crafting in the Spanish tradition.
Lou’s next port of call was the distant town of Chefchouene on the edge of the Rif mountains in Morocco. Here he learnt & preserved the ancient methods of Arabic shoe making, just as the ancient craft was being desecrated by mass produced industrial footwear. For 13 years, Lou Guerin designed boots, sandals, bags, & belts. His workshop grew in scale to include thirty five hand-tooling leather workers and over 100 apprentice toolers.
Post-Morocco, Lou spent six years in NZ making custom boots with his new techniques. In 2000, Lou Guerin moved to Bali, where he began his love affair with the world of gothic silver jewelry. Today, Lou Guerin sterling silver gothic jewelry sits atop the forefront of the sterling silver gothic jewelry world alongside Chrome Hearts, Bill Wall Leather and other established gothic jewelry designer brands.
